Settled in 1805 as Twickenham, Huntsville has since become one of the most recognized cities in the South. As the fourth largest city in Alabama, Huntsville was originally home to textile mills and munitions factories. After World War II there was no need for munitions factories, so they were combined as the Redstone Arsenal. The Redstone Arsenal was then selected for the U.S. Army’s rocket and missile development programs. In 1960, part of the Redstone Arsenal was transferred to NASA and became the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center. Due to its close history with U.S. space missions, Huntsville has been nicknamed “The Rocket City”

During the 1960’s, scientists at the Marshall Space Flight Center helped develop the Saturn booster rockets used in the Apollo Lunar Landing Program. Today, in the absence of a space shuttle program, Huntsville has made the transition to missile defense and working with several different Army organizations. Near NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, the U.S. Space and Rocket Center houses Space Camp. Space Camp is where kids 9 to 99 can spend time learning just what it takes to be a real astronaut. Camps run almost year round.
