Corpus Christi was founded in 1839 by Colonel Henry Lawrence Kinney as Kinney's Trading Post, or Kinney's Ranch, a small trading post to sell supplies to a Mexican revolutionary army. In 1847 it was renamed Corpus Christi.
Corpus Christi is a very diverse part of Texas, which offers a rich blend of culture, nature and entertainment sure to inspire all year around. The large Naval base and its employees, Port, Hispanic community, oil industry workers, cowboys and surfers all add their uniqueness to what makes up the city. The Port of Corpus Christi is the fifth largest port in the United States.
One of the biggest festivals in the city is the annual Buccaneer Days Festival, held each Spring. The festival was founded in 1938 and was developed to provide educational scholarships to area students while celebrating the history of Corpus Christi. The Pirate Jean Lafitte, after his presidential pardon for his role in the war of 1812, moved his buccaneer headquarters to the present site of Corpus Christi in 1821.
Some of the most visited attractions are on North Beach, where the Texas State Aquarium and the USS Lexington Museum on the Bay are located. At the city marina is a replica of Christopher Columbus’s ship the Niña. Whereas, the Pinta and Santa Maria replicas are displayed at the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History.
