Originally inhabited by the Kumeyaay Indians for over 10,000 years, the first European to visit the area was Juan Cabrillo, in 1542, who named the area San Miguel for his native country of Spain. In 1602 the site was renamed San Diego in honor of Saint Didacus, known as San Diego de Alcala in Spain. Throughout its long history, San Diego has been a Spanish Territory, a Mexican city and finally a United States Territory as a result of the Mexican-American War. San Diego was finally incorporated into a city in 1889 as part of the State of California.
In the years since, San diego has hosted two World's Fairs in famous Balboa Park. San Diego was also a key city during World War II due to its becoming a hub of military and defense activity. Additionally, san Diego became the home of some important airplane designers such as Ryan Airlines, who went on to build Charles Lindbergh's The Spirit of St. Louis.
Today, San Diego has gone through a revitalization after some down times with the opening of Horton plaza, the revival of the Gaslamp Quarter and the development of the San Diego Convention Center and PETCO Park, home of the San Diego Padres of MLB.
