As the "City with Soul", the City of Jackson virtually vibrates with history.  Jackson was named for President Andrew Jackson in recognition of his victory at the Battle of New Orleans and is the capital of the State of Mississippi. During the beginning of the Civil War, Jackson was a center of manufacturing for the Confederacy up to its capture by the Union forces in 1863. 

Today, Jackson is a cultural oasis of the South. Jackson is a dynamic melting pot, deeply rooted in art, culture, history, and industry. From the Ballet to the Blues; you won’t just hear the music – you’ll feel the history behind it.  Malaco Records, one of the leading recording companies for blues, gospel and soul music was founded in 1968 and has recorded albums for Paul Simon, Bobby Bland, Latimore and many others. 

Farish Street is to Jackson what Beale Street is to Memphis.  Historic sites such as the Trumpet Record Company and Recording Studio, Alamo Theater, the Big Apple Inn (formerly Big John’s) give visitors many places to hear that famous Farish Street Sound.  

An interesting fact about Jackson is that is sits atop the Jackson Volcano, an extinct volcano discovered in 1819, which sits 2900 feet below the city directly under the Mississippi Coliseum.  This volcano is believed to have been extinct for over 65 million years.
