About Lafayette, LA From the Web...
Lafayette is part of a region of South Louisnana known as Acadiana. The name derives from an episode known as "le Grand Derangement" (the Great Upheaval), which was the expulsion of the Acadians from Nova Scotia by the British in 1755. These Acadians eventually wound up settling throught South and Southwest Louisiana along with settlers from other regions of the world such as the Carribean. This "melting pot" of culture became what is known today as Creole and Cajun.
Founded as Vermillionville in 1821 by Jean Mouton and later renamed in 1884, Lafayette was founded primarily as an agricultural community until the 1940's when oil and gas became more prominent. Even though it is a relatively young city, Lafayette is rich in culture and tradition and it shows from the food that we eat to the festivals and events that we put on.
Lafayette today is not much different that when it first began. The area is one of the most culturally diverse areas of the country and that diversity is celebrated every year on the last weekend of April at Festival International de Louisiane. Festival is a 4 day party full of bands, food and friends from all over the world to celebrate the music that brings Lafayette together. Speaking of food, you can't ever forget the food. Lafayette has been named "Best Food City" by Rand McNally and USA Today. Try the cracklins!
